"Now, the implications from the outside are obvious. If I see God as male, if I see God as white male, if I see God as superior, as God over us and not Immanuel, which means "God with us," if I see God as mean, vengeful, authoritarian, sexist, or misogynist, then I see humans through that lens. My theological lens shapes my anthropological lens. And as a result, white males are superior; all others are inferior. And I order my society where I can worship God on Sunday morning wearing a black clergy robe and kill others on Sunday evening wearing a white Klan robe. I can have laws which favor whites over blacks in America or South Africa. I can construct a theology of apartheid in the Africana church (ph) and a theology of white supremacy in the North American or Germanic church. " - Rev. Jeremiah Wright at the National Press Club 4/28/08
In case you missed the first round of endless excerpts from "The Best of Rev. Jeremiah Wright", we were blessed again last week with the inspirational and uplifting rhetoric of Barack Obama's former pastor. Having finally emerged from the sewer, Wright confirmed his depravity in front of the National Press Club by essentially restating his cockamamie theories about government culpability for AIDS and alleged US terrorism.
Given the chance to clarify his views on a variety of subjects, Wright left no doubt that he was an Anti-American megalomaniac. A demagogue who infuses religion with a dangerous mix of politics and reverse racism; not to instill spiritual wealth in his flock, but to perpetually pick at social scabs that would otherwise heal - if only allowed to do so. When asked questions like "Can you explain what you meant in a sermon shortly after 9/11 when you said...Quote, 'America's chickens are coming home to roost.' ?", Wright responded "You cannot do terrorism on other people and expect it never to come back on you. Those are biblical principles, not Jeremiah Wright bombastic, divisive principles."
When asked about his relationship with Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, Wright pined "Louis Farrakhan is not my enemy. He did not put me in chains. He did not put me in slavery. And he didn't make me this color."
When asked if he owed the American people an apology for his "God Damn America" outburst, he said "Britain has apologized to Africans, but this country's leaders have refused to apologize. So until that apology comes, I'm not going to keep stepping on your foot and asking you, "Does this hurt? Do you forgive me for stepping on your foot?" if I'm still stepping on your foot. Understand that? Capiche? "
When asked to elaborate on his comparison of the Roman soldiers who crucified Jesus to the US Marine Corps, Wright responded "We have troops stationed all over the world, just like Rome had troops stationed all over the world, because we run the world. That notion of imperialism is not the message of the gospel of the prince of peace, nor of God, who loves the world."
- For 20 years, Obama was friends with this man.
- For 20 years, he sat in the pews. He even indoctrinated his young daughters with Wright's rhetoric.
- Obama apparently thought so much of Wright that he titled his book after a Wright sermon.
- Wright was an Obama campaign advisor until Obama dis-invited Wright from his campaign kickoff due to his bombastic nature.
- Wright married Obama and baptized his daughters.
- Obama defended Wright, until Wright finally became so bombastic that it began to hurt Obama's campaign and he had no choice
There should be no doubt in any thinking person's mind that Wright influenced Obama. The burning question is, to what degree? Weekend polls suggested that a majority of Americans now believe that Obama shares Rev. Wright's views. A majority also believe that he denounced Wright out of political expediency rather than genuine outrage. A majority of middle-class, white males just aren't drinking Obama's Kool-Aid ™ and you can't win an election without that constituency.
Several things are evident about Jeremiah Wright as well. He despises this country. He despises the military. He despises the government. He collectively despises white people. He despises their God. He despises their religion. He talks as if he has somehow been enslaved. He thinks that his 6 years of service in the Marine Corps is enough --in and of itself-- to brand him a patriot. And he believes that an attack on him is an attack on the black church, a notion roundly criticized by many black church leaders.
The mainstream media can continue to grant Obama a free ride, it really doesn't matter. Actions will always speak several orders of magnitude louder than words, regardless of who utters them. You simply cannot maintain the kind of relationship that Obama had with Wright and claim that you don't share those views. Rather than heal the country or move it towards reconciliation, Obama's relationship with Wright has further divided us. For those who still throw their unqualified support behind this snake oil salesman, I have one question for you. Just what part of "God Damn America" don't you understand?
