Latin America is the one place where Communist propaganda won. For the international community excuses you if you on being a brutal dictator if you're an anti-American Communist dictator such as Fidel Castro and the Sandnistas but they'll severely condemn you if you're a right-wing pro-American dictator like General Augusto Pinochet or Anastasio Somoza.
But I will focus on Chile in this article, regarding the events of the coup on 1973, another time on history where Communist propaganda won. You commonly hear about the innocent democratically-elected Salvador Allende. hearing the political correct leftist version, you'd think that America and their proxy General Augustin Pinochet decided it was a nice time to have a coup, destroy democracy and set up a brutal dictatorship. You'd think that Pinochet thought,"Hey. It's nice time to be a brutal military dictator."
And then you'd hear about the thousands of innocent people killed by Pinochet. I'm not hear denying that Pinochet committed human rights violations
I will say that the truth is a bit more complicated. Pretty much everyone agrees that Salvador Allende was democratically. Though, the left says he was popularly elected. He did get enough votes to win the election. He got a third of the vote and was elected by the Chilean Congress.
But after he was elected was when he showed his true colors. he did not just declare that he's a dictator. He was not like the Shining Path or many of these Communist terrorists in terminating democracy and just taking power. He decided to use the democratic system to impose a Communist dictatorship on Chile.
Allende as publicly a Socialist. So the Chilean congress made him swear that his land reform wouldn't violate the Chilean constitution. However, he support Communist terrorists who took people's land forcibly and put it under government ownership. These Communist terrorists kidnapped and/or killed anyone who opposed Allende.
Journeyman pictures also documented some of Allende's atrocities and showed a little bit about people who were tortured under Salvador Allende.
Allende's Communist policies destroyed the Chilean economy. People had to wait hours in line just to get food.
Another militant group Fatherland and Liberty was founded in response to Allende trying to impose a Communist dictatorship. I'm not saying I agree with the means that group used. That group fought against Allende. Without Allende's attempt at turning chile into a Communist dictatorship, that group wouldn't have existed.
The Chilean Supreme Court called on Allende to restore order. But he still continued to support Communist terrorists who carried out his state terrorism.
So Allende disobeyed the Supreme Court decision. The Chilean Supreme Court and Congress had as much power as the King and Queen have today i.e. no power. Allende and his Communist allies started a civil war in Chile.
Allende was allied to Communist countries such as the Soviet Union, Cuba and China. In August 22, 1973, the lower house of Chile's congress the Chilean Chamber of Deputies decided they had enough of Allende and called for his removal. They knew that they couldn't get rid of him. So they went to the Chilean army and called on them to overthrow Allende.
The two parties, which drafted the resolution on the Chilean Chamber of Deputies was the Christian Democrats and the National Party. No, the Chamber of deputies wasn't infiltrated by the Americans. Just by people who were sick and tired of Allende's constitutional violations and sought to restore their democracy.
The Christian democrats elected him and was one of the parties that made him swear that his land reform wouldn't violate the Chilean constitution. However, that party saw what Allende was really doing and joined the National Party in calling for his removal.
The coup was the result of Allende's attempt to turn his country into a Communist dictatorship. On September 11, 1973, La Moneda Palaces were bombed. Allende was forced to surrender. However he took a gun given to him by then Cuban dictator Fidel Castro and shot himself. He then became a victimized martyr to the political left while Pinochet, who took over, became the demon of the left. If you look at how Pinochet took power and see Allende's atrocities, attempts to become a Communist dictator and also his economic policies, which destroyed the Chilean economy, then you're labeled as a Fascist or a Nazi by the left. You get yelled at about Pinochet's atrocities even if you don't deny that he committed any. During the time of the coup, Allende was very unpopular in Chile.
If you look at what happened, then you get labeled a Pinochet support by the left. the left will say that you're a fascist because you support Pinochet who was a fascist.
Pinochet wasn't fascist. He wasn't any ideology except right-wing and anti-Communist He didn't come from any political party. He was a General who came in reaction to Allende's destruction of democracy.
Pinochet then took power. He knew that he would someday have to give up power to democracy and was there temporarily to combat the Communists. Yes, Pinochet committed human rights violations, which should be condemned like he ones committed by Castro or the Sandinistas or Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez. He didn't plan to stay there as long as he wanted to but knew that he would be the one to restore democracy.
In 1975, Pinochet, by listening to the economic scholars in the University of Chicago, didn't just fix the Chilean economy by turning it into a free-market Capitalist country. Pinochet's free-market Capitalist policies made Chile a prosperous country.
Pinochet drafted the 1980 constitution, which was approved by most Chileans. Also he repeatedly won different plebiscites on whether he should stay in power until the one on 1990, when he resigned and made way for a democracy. So as a result, Chile is one of the most prosperous democracies.
Leftists compare the 1973 s the other 9/11 trying to draw a moral equivalence between America and Islamo-fascist terrorists who seek the destruction of western civilization and to have an Islamic caliphate that would dominate the world.
However, the two 9/11s are incomparable. The 9/11 terrorist attack on America in 2001 is far worse. The one in Chile was an ugly path but the only path that led to the restoration of democracy in Chile. The one on America is a terrorist attack that killed more than 3,000 innocent Americans on cold-blood for being infidels and to turn America into an Islamic Fundamentalist state and to create a global Islamic caliphate that would dominate the world. Yes, President Bush is right that the radical Islamist terrorists attacked us for hating freedom and our way of life.
Many leftists complain that we don't teach about how the evil America and their proxy Pinochet destroyed democracy in Chile for the heck of it.
The ones who destroyed democracy in Chile was Allende's Popular Unity Government, not the Americans or Pinochet. The Americans condemned Pinochet's human rights violations.
The US-supported coup was in response to Allende's attempt to turn Chile into a Communist dictatorship. The complaint should be that we don;t know more about Allende's attempt to turn Chile into a Communist dictatorship and how his Communist policies destroyed Chile's economy. The US reacted because they didn't want soviet-support Communist tyranny to win in Chile.
The coup, as ugly as it was, was the only path to prevent chile from being a Communist dictatorship.
