It is quite common, given the regressive points system used in NASCAR, for a driver to be in or near the lead in points for the season without having won a single race. Finishing consistenly in the top ten with a few top fives thrown in will have your race team sitting pretty at the end of the season. Unfortunately, the GOP Primaries look alot like NASCAR, only stupider.
During ther early primaries, John McCain kept losing. Even the primaries that we have been told he won, McCain actually lost, and badly,to a guy named Romney-Thompson-Huckabee. John McCainwonfiveprimaries with votepercentages in the 30s and one in the 20s. He didn't break 50 % until Connecticut on february 1st. On february 5thhe broke 50 % inNew Jersey and New York. By that time Huckabee's surge was too late.
That amounts to a winning percentage of 10%, 3 out of 30 contests.
What are we to do when there are several Conservative candidatessniping among themselveswhilethe candidates most voters would describe as theirleast favorite rides the deadskunk(middle of the road) constituency to victory? I have a suggestion.
Conservatives should form a caucus organization within the Republican Party. The primary purpose of this caucus would be to narrow down the field of presidential candidates prior to the beginning of the primaries. It would be like a playoff system for politicians. This wouldeliminatethe futility of trying to form a third party. If we could narrow down the Conservative offering to one standardbearer, we could avoid another disappointment like what we have now. The question would be whether our best candidates would be willing to put the interests of the cause ahead of their own careers and accept the verdict of the caucus. I doubt it butI thinkit would be a good idea.
