It’s no secret that liberals hold in contempt what they regard as the provincial nature of conservatives. And I certainly would love to buy liberals for what I think they’re worth and sell them for what they think they’re worth, to paraphrase the old retort. That said, a part of me is so frustrated with my traditionalist brethren that I could almost be persuaded that the left is, in some minute measure, correct. For the sagacity reflected in our ends is matched by the stupidity of our means. And the left is quite the opposite. Thursday, March 30, 2006 09:34:47 AM
One reason we’re supposed to rejoice at the pitter-patter of illegal feet is that foreigners are only coming here to “do jobs Americans won’t do.” It’s one of those basic assumptions upon which the argument in favor of forgetting we have borders, a culture and laws rests, and even President Bush mentioned this “truth” while speaking about immigration reform recently. And, undoubtedly, there are certain immutable laws of economics. Monday, March 27, 2006 10:04:11 AM
Are conservative leanings the fruits of intellectual inquiry or the fault of psychological frailty? If psychologist Jack Block is to be believed, it’s the latter. Saturday, March 25, 2006 07:40:21 PM
While the invasion of our nation through the southern border continues unabated, our fearless leaders are once again busy cooking up cures that are worse than the disease. The latest scheme is a form of de facto amnesty euphemistically called the “Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act.” And if it passes, it could be America’s final act. While art imitates life, it’s also true that life imitates art. It’s with this in mind that my eyebrows were raised upon hearing about Big Love, a series with which HBO breaks new, albeit not hallowed, ground. It stars Bill Paxton as Salt Lake City businessman Bill Henrickson, a man with two lives and three wives, as he is a polygamist who keeps his families life secret. Friday, March 17, 2006 11:16:30 AM
We hear a lot about women’s “reproductive rights.” In fact, some leftist politicians – Barbara Boxer comes to mind – seem to be able to segue from any conceivable topic to a discussion of them with aplomb. But do men have reproductive rights too? Tuesday, March 07, 2006 12:33:51 PM
If anything renders people sheep among wolves, it’s when they convince themselves that every creature is a sheep. We live in an age in which one of the few sins is giving offense, one of the only virtues is a tendentious tolerance and one of the top priorities is getting along. In light of this, it’s not surprising that a steadfast refusal to draw moral distinctions is all the rage. Thursday, February 23, 2006 11:15:09 AM
It really is true that lies have short legs. One way or another, liberals always end up contradicting themselves, tacitly acknowledging that their pronouncements are more political artifice than statesmanlike artistry, more incitive than insightful. Wednesday, February 22, 2006 01:23:01 PM
There’s a gathering political storm centered around ports, one that has united a motley crew from across the political spectrum, from Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer to Rick Santorum and Michael Savage. At issue is a deal that would allow DP World, a United Arab Emirates company, to assume control of seaports in New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Baltimore, New Orleans, and Miami. When is a hate-crime not a hate-crime? Answer: when the powers-that-be say it isn’t. Saturday, February 04, 2006 08:21:37 PM
If a new application of the Global Positioning System (GPS) passes muster and finds favor with the Big Siblings of Western democracies, speeding may eventually become a thing of the past. Tuesday, January 24, 2006 06:46:58 AM
Sometimes the news' timing is bittersweet. On the heels of a piece I just wrote about modern man and the wrath of God, New Orleans Mayor "Sugar Ray" Nagin chimed in with his own thoughts on the matter. While he seemed to agree with those who attribute Hurricane Katrina to divine retribution, his conception of God’s priorities differs a tad from those of the Pat Robertsons, Jerry Falwells and Hank Irwins of the world. Monday, January 16, 2006 10:39:52 AM
Whether or not you believe in the wrath of God, there is no question that the wrath of the ungodly left is often on full display. As for the latter, evangelist Pat Robertson got quite a liberal dose of it most recently. Friday, January 06, 2006 12:26:29 PM
When one hears the word chivalry, thoughts of both the fanciful and practical are evoked. There are the quaint images of a valiant hero rescuing a damsel in distress from train tracks or of a man throwing his coat over a puddle for an enchanting belle (Was this obligatory with leather coats, too?). While many are still oblivious to it and the effluent-stream media deny it’s happening, there is an attack on Christmas. Like others, I would say “war,” but that would be inaccurate. Monday, December 12, 2005 09:33:19 AM
Liberals we are and though we eschew its reason, Capitalize we will on the “Winter Break Season.” It's good for making money and for spoiling offspring, But mention the Son and from the gallows you’ll swing. Wednesday, December 07, 2005 02:53:16 PM
While flying on Qantas Airlines, New Zealander Mark Worsley was asked to change his seat. You see, the airline viewed him as a threat to the child seated next to him. What was Mr. Worsley’s crime? Was he on a sex-offenders database? Far from it. Wednesday, November 30, 2005 01:45:28 PM
It has long been said that money can come between friends. But as the recent hysteria over rising oil prices reminds me, it can also come between the human mind and sound economic principles. Thursday, November 17, 2005 12:52:15 PM
Perhaps the only thing that bores me more than hearing incessant murder-mystery reportage is writing about it. Tuesday, November 08, 2005 08:46:09 AM
As riots spread throughout France like wildfires left unattended by those afraid to use water, a sane person has to be struck by the impotence of modern Western governments. Friday, October 28, 2005 12:02:50 PM
It has long been an assertion of mine that there’s only one difference between Adolph Hitler and some of the misbegotten souls who lurk among us: means. I don't know that I subscribe to the notion that power corrupts, but I do know that it releases inhibitions, causing one’s true colors to shine through. Wednesday, October 26, 2005 09:30:55 PM
The insidious thing about evolutionary tyranny is that it’s only as visible as the people are perceptive. It doesn’t beat you over the head like the iron fist of a despot or sweep you aside like a wave of revolution, but, rather, is a death by a thousand doses of bad medicine that makes benign neglect seem utopian. Tuesday, October 04, 2005 04:15:08 PM
Well, we knew it was coming. After having the unmitigated gall to appoint to the High Court that odious creature known as a white man, President Bush has redeemed himself before the altar of baal with an affirmative-action nominee. Friday, September 30, 2005 03:09:44 PM
Something truly outrageous has recently come to light, but it hasn’t gotten much play in the effluent-stream media. This something is the stomach-turning revelation that a Chinese cosmetics company is using, get this, human skin to make beauty products. Saturday, September 24, 2005 12:06:46 AM
"Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us . . ." Few topics are as misunderstood as forgiveness. Tuesday, September 13, 2005 03:28:35 AM
In the wake of Hurricane Katrina there were certain inevitabilities. No, scores of thousands of hapless souls trapped in a city on a precipice was not one of them. Personal and governmental responsibility would have relegated that scenario to the realm of imagination. Friday, August 19, 2005 04:49:34 PM
Recently I wrote a piece titled "Who's Really Stealing Elections?" in which I reported on a study documenting the rampancy of Democrat vote-fraud. Friday, August 12, 2005 08:33:31 AM
Cindy Sheehan's son fought under our Commander-in-Chief. Cindy Sheehan fights against him. Cindy Sheehan's son was killed on the front lines. Cindy Sheehan is pushed to the front because she tows the liberal line. We aren't supposed to fight against Cindy Sheehan because she's a wounded soul. Wednesday, August 10, 2005 03:01:10 AM
As you may know, those big, bad, wascally Republicans have long been stealing elections with a sleight-of-hand that would do Boss Tweed proud. It has gotten so bad that a philistine like George Bush was actually able to vanquish profoundly intellectual, eminently virtuous, truly great Americans like Al Gore and John Kerry in successive national elections. Friday, July 29, 2005 01:15:57 PM
There's sweet irony; there's delicious irony; and then there's irony that a spoonful of which would just make medicine go down. |
