By Doug Kellett - Several thoughts have come to mind watching the Democratic National Convention this week that I haven’t seen expressed any where at the moment. Friday, August 22, 2008 01:43:47 PM
by Michael Barone - Once upon a time, the two parties' national conventions chose presidential nominees. Now, they are television shows that try to establish a narrative -- one that links the long-since-determined nominee's life story with the ongoing history of the nation, one that shows how this one man is perfectly positioned to lead America to a better future. The hope is that the nominee will get a bounce in the polls. Friday, August 22, 2008 01:37:19 PM
by Roger Simon - Barack Obama is dropping a little in the polls, and John McCain is rising a little in the polls, which is to say the race for president is now a toss-up. This will change. A little. Saturday, August 16, 2008 10:00:00 AM
by Michael Barone - Last week, the two erstwhile communist superpowers were in the spotlight. Starting on Aug. 8, China staged the Olympics -- an event on the schedule for years. Also on Aug. 8, Russia invaded the independent republic of Georgia -- which apparently caught our government flatfooted. Friday, August 15, 2008 10:46:57 AM
by Roger Simon - I am having trouble figuring out the savage reaction in some circles to John Edwards' admission that he had an affair and lied about it. Thursday, August 14, 2008 10:30:20 AM
Guest opinion submitted by Idaho Senator Mike Crapo - Every August, Idahoans attend or participate in county, regional and state fairs. Tuesday, August 12, 2008 11:47:39 AM
by Dr. Jack Wheeler -- Time to stop the hand-wringing about Russia's re-igniting the Cold War by invading Georgia. Time to start thinking of what a golden opportunity this presents. Friday, August 08, 2008 10:02:00 AM
by Roger Simon -- John McCain has found a terrible word to call Barack Obama. In two recent ads, McCain has called Obama the "c-word." Friday, August 08, 2008 10:00:00 AM
by Michael Barone -- To understand changes in the political map, we naturally tend to look for contemporary explanations. But American political alignments are not written on an empty slate. Beginnings matter, and the civic personalities of states tend to reflect the cultural folkways of their first settlers. Monday, August 04, 2008 10:01:00 AM
By Doug Kellett - With an unusual by-partisan move last week, members of congress from both parties urged a vote allowing drilling along the U.S. coastal area plus within our borders including in Alaska’s wildlife reserve. These politicians have heard loudly from a majority of citizens that drilling is an immediate answer to the problem of rising oil prices and the cost per gallon of gasoline. Saturday, August 02, 2008 10:00:00 AM
by Roger Simon - During his primary campaign, while Barack Obama concentrated on inspiration, his staff concentrated on arithmetic. Saturday, August 02, 2008 10:00:00 AM
by Michael Barone - Just when you think you've got the presidential race figured out, something comes along to upend your carefully wrought conclusions. Tuesday, July 29, 2008 10:40:08 AM
By Tom DeLay - My daughter jokes that he was tougher on her than I was. But in the case of Capitol Police Detective John Gibson, his influence on my family was not born of the years we were together, the thousands of hours, hundreds of meals and dozens of holidays we celebrated together. It was the man. Tuesday, July 29, 2008 10:00:00 AM
Posted on the National Press Club's site under ETHICS, is Walter William's Journalist's Creed. This creed was written by Walter Williams (1864-1935), the man who founded the world's first school of journalism at the University of Missouri and perhaps contributed more toward the promotion of professional journalism than any other person of his time. Guest opinion submitted by Idaho Senator Mike Crapo - After the snow we had last winter, fires that have ravaged northeastern Washington and the few we've seen in Idaho to date seem somewhat improbable. Unfortunately, even the record-breaking winter we just had isn't a guarantee against wildland fires; in some cases, underbrush growth encouraged by a wet winter can exacerbate troublesome fire conditions. History has demonstrated clearly that, for Westerners, wildfire, like cyclical drought, is a fact of life for which we must be prepared. Wednesday, July 23, 2008 10:01:00 AM
by JACK KEMP - The future of Social Security presents not just a crisis for America, but an even bigger opportunity. For Social Security reform done right is a huge opportunity for a historic breakthrough in the personal prosperity of working people. Monday, July 21, 2008 11:29:57 AM
By Doug Kellett - A couple of stories I read the other day got my blood going and it is the continued assault and war on Christianity. A war not in some far off land where Christians are feared and where some tribal lord is skeptical of it's dogma. I'm talking here in America where academia continues the battle. Guest opinion submitted by Idaho Senator Mike Crapo Millions rely on Medicare to access our healthcare system. They should have exceptional care and cutting edge treatments available to them. Tuesday, July 15, 2008 11:45:00 AM
By Doug Kellett - Former Texas U.S. Senator Phil Gramm grabbed headlines recently when he said that the nation is suffering from a “mental recession.” He also said we are a nation of “whiners.” The media descended on Gramm but I think he is right. Friday, July 11, 2008 10:00:00 AM
Guest opinion submitted by Idaho Senator Mike Crapo - "'This may be considered as the true palladium of liberty...The right to self defence is the first law of nature: in most governments it has been the study of rulers to confine the right within the narrowest limits possible. Wherever standing armies are kept up, and the right of the people to keep and bear arms is under any colour or pretext whatsoever, prohibited, liberty, if not already annihilated, is on the brink of destruction.'" -Justice Antonin Scalia, quoting St. George Tucker in the majority opinion in District of Columbia v. Heller Wednesday, July 02, 2008 05:10:31 PM
Don Boys, Ph.D. - Baptist people have been the most principled people since the time of Christ. I do not believe that the designation of “Baptist” is nearly as important as the doctrine, but I want people to know where I stand. I am a Baptist, and am proud of my heritage that has made an incredible impact on this world—even Jefferson and the U.S. Constitution! Wednesday, June 25, 2008 01:36:26 PM
Guest opinion submitted by Idaho Senator Mike Crapo Monday, June 23, 2008 07:12:31 PM
by Rusty Leonard and Warren Cole Smith -- Even some Pentecostals are skeptical of Todd Bentley's tent revival Monday, May 19, 2008 10:00:00 AM
by Neil Price -- He has spoken up against the war in Iraq so many times already, and in so many derogatory ways, I believe it would actually be extremely dangerous for him to even take a trip abroad let alone speak unconditionally with so many enemies of America. Monday, May 12, 2008 10:00:00 AM
by David Losey - It is not the role of government to intervene in the free market system for the benefit of a select group. Those elected officials who vote for such intervention should be voted out of office. They have overstepped the Constitutional restraints placed on government and violated their oath of office. Sunday, May 11, 2008 01:05:00 PM
By Erika Holzer - About this time last year I was smiling at the on-screen image of the captivating and feisty Renee Zellweger as she breathed life into a delightful biopic of Beatrix Potter. I recall thinking about how countless children had been entranced by Ms. Potter's short stories. Suddenly I was blinking back tears, sitting in a movie theater and actually whispering some all-too-familiar lines from The Tale of Peter Rabbit! Friday, May 09, 2008 10:00:00 AM
By Armstrong Williams - Tuesday’s primary results from Indiana and North Carolina all but render any discussion about Senator Hillary Clinton a moot point. But despite her long-shot bid at the Democratic nomination, Clinton is still fighting away, and her supporters continue to believe she is the right man – err, woman – for the job. Guest opinion submitted by Idaho Senator Mike Crapo "It's a war that may never end, but for centuries, men and women, have readily and willingly put themselves in harm's way, right here at home, to keep the peace." -David Kerr, Author Saturday, May 03, 2008 10:00:00 AM
by Grant Swank -- Our little girl was clinging to me, wondering why we were in this strange place. Then I looked at my wife, understanding that in a short time she would be hospitalized. Brain surgery in Boston. Saturday, May 03, 2008 10:00:00 AM
